Alchimiste Gluten Free Blonde Review
A blonde ale with nothing to hide.
Genuinely gluten-free, brewed in Quebec with millet and buckwheat instead of barley. Crisp, light, and easy going.
This is the everyday can I keep coming back to.

First Impressions
Gluten-free beer usually asks you to lower your expectations before the first sip. Alchimiste never got that memo. This independent Quebec microbrewery went and built a blonde ale on millet and buckwheat instead of barley, and the whole point is that you are not supposed to be able to tell. I poured it fully ready to forgive a few things. I did not have to.
The 473mL can is clean and confident, that stripped-back Alchimiste look that trusts the beer to do the talking. In the glass it comes out a bright, clear gold with a soft white head that settles into a thin lace. It looks exactly like a blonde ale should look, no apology needed.
The nose is gentle and honest. Light cracker malt, a whisper of grassy hops, and a faint floral lift underneath. It smells like a slow afternoon on a patio before anyone has said a word.
How it actually tastes
The first sip is where the doubt disappears. It is crisp, light-bodied, and genuinely refreshing, with a clean malt sweetness up front and just enough hop bite to keep it lively. There is none of that thin, grainy edge that trips up so many gluten-free beers. It drinks like a proper easy-going blonde!
The balance is the quiet win here. The carbonation is bright and keeps everything moving, the finish comes through dry and clean, and the flavour stays consistent from the first mouthful to the last. Ice-cold is where it shines, and it holds that crisp character right down to the bottom of the glass.
A Small Ritual I Like
Serve it straight from the fridge in a tall glass, no ice needed, and let the bubbles do their thing. This is a lawn-mowing beer, a first-one-home-after-work beer, a Tuesday-night-with-tacos beer. It pairs beautifully with grilled vegetables, seafood, a light sandwich, or a wedge of soft cheese.
At $3.99 a can it is an easy staple to keep stocked, and for the gluten-free crowd it is a genuine win! Being handed a real blonde ale you can actually drink, at a table where you used to just watch, matters more than any tasting note.
Crisp. Clean. Honestly gluten-free. Keep a few cold and you will reach for them all week!

Frequently asked questions
Is the Alchimiste Blonde actually gluten-free?
Yes. It is brewed entirely without barley or wheat, using millet and buckwheat as its base grains, so it is naturally gluten-free rather than gluten-removed. If you have celiac disease it is always worth confirming the current specs with the brewery, but this is built from the ground up as a gluten-free beer.
How much alcohol does it contain?
Less than 0.5% ABV, the same standard as the other non-alcoholic beers we carry. That trace level comes from the brewing process, so if you avoid alcohol entirely for medical or personal reasons, keep that in mind.
What does it taste like and what pairs with it?
It is a crisp, light-bodied blonde ale with light malt, subtle hops, and a clean refreshing finish. It pairs well with salads, grilled vegetables, seafood, light sandwiches, and soft cheeses.
